Introduction
Somerset Youth Angling Club (“The Club”) is committed to promoting environmental responsibility and sustainable practices in all its activities. We recognize the importance of protecting the natural environment for current and future generations and aim to minimize the ecological impact of our operations.
1. Key Principles
- To foster a culture of environmental stewardship among all members and participants.
- To minimize waste and pollution generated by Club activities.
- To support and engage in conservation efforts that enhance local ecosystems.
- To educate members, especially young people, about the importance of protecting the environment.
2. Scope of the Policy
This policy applies to:
- All activities organized by The Club, including fishing events, training sessions, and competitions.
- All members, volunteers, and visitors participating in Club activities.
- The Club’s use of resources, facilities, and equipment.
3. Responsibilities
3.1 The Committee
The Committee is responsible for:
- Ensuring environmental considerations are integrated into all aspects of Club operations.
- Providing resources and training to support environmentally sustainable practices.
- Reviewing and updating this policy annually.
3.2 Members and Volunteers
Members and volunteers are expected to:
- Follow the guidelines set out in this policy.
- Take personal responsibility for minimizing their environmental impact.
- Report any environmental concerns to the Committee or the Environmental Officer.
3.3 Environmental Officer
The Environmental Officer will:
- Lead the implementation of this policy.
- Monitor the environmental impact of Club activities.
- Coordinate conservation projects and educational initiatives.
4. Environmental Guidelines
4.1 Waste Management
- All waste, including fishing lines, hooks, and bait containers, must be disposed of responsibly.
- Recycling facilities will be provided at Club events wherever possible.
- Members are encouraged to use reusable or biodegradable materials to reduce single-use plastics.
4.2 Pollution Prevention
- Members must avoid practices that could pollute waterways or harm wildlife.
- Spills of substances such as fuel or bait must be reported and cleaned up immediately.
- Care must be taken to prevent disturbance to aquatic habitats during fishing activities.
4.3 Conservation Efforts
- The Club will participate in or support local conservation projects, such as habitat restoration and litter clean-ups.
- Members are encouraged to contribute to initiatives that enhance biodiversity and protect endangered species.
- Efforts will be made to educate junior members about conservation and sustainable fishing practices.
4.4 Energy and Resource Use
- The Club will seek to use energy-efficient equipment and practices.
- Carpooling and the use of public transportation to events will be encouraged to reduce carbon emissions.
- Water resources will be used responsibly to avoid wastage.
5. Education and Awareness
- The Club will provide training and resources to educate members about environmental issues.
- Junior members will be engaged in activities that promote environmental awareness and responsibility.
- The Club will promote environmental awareness through its communications, including newsletters and social media.
6. Monitoring and Review
- This policy will be reviewed annually by the Committee to ensure its effectiveness.
- Feedback from members will be taken into account during the review process.
- Environmental performance metrics, such as waste reduction and participation in conservation activities, will be monitored.
