Venue & Tackle Information

  • Venue Name:
    Charlton Orchard
  • Website:
    https://www.tauntonanglingassociation.co.uk/
  • Overview:

The Charlton Orchard stretch of the Bridgwater & Taunton Canal is a prime location for junior and beginner anglers looking to develop their skills in a peaceful, well-stocked setting. This section is ideal for both pleasure and match fishing and is a favourite among local clubs and Let's Fish! events.

Recommended Tackle:
  • Whip Fishing: A 4–6 metre whip is perfect for close-in fishing, especially for cadets and newcomers. Use a light elastic or flick tip for quick bites and minimal fuss.
  • Pole Fishing Across: For more experienced anglers, a long pole (11–13m) can help you reach the far shelf or cover areas. Use a soft hollow elastic setup for better fish control.

Recommended Bait:
  • Pinkies & Maggots: Ideal for small roach, perch, and gudgeon. Great for feeding up your swim slowly and consistently.
  • Bread Punch: Classic winter bait for roach. Best used on a fine hook and light rig when bites are finicky.
  • Chopped Worm & Caster: Excellent for tempting better stamp fish like perch or skimmers when fishing tight to far bank features or drop-offs.

Bonus Tips

  • Feed lightly and top up your swim regularly to keep fish in the area.
  • Fish tight to reeds or near any visible structure for bigger bites.
  • Always bring a disgorger, plummet, and bait towel — essentials for canal sessions.
