Overview

Viaduct Fisheries – Somerset’s Premier Venue for Juniors & Families

Viaduct Fisheries, located near Somerton, is one of Somerset’s best-known and most respected coarse fishing venues. Managed to an exceptionally high standard, it offers a safe, welcoming environment for anglers of all abilities — especially juniors who want to experience top-class fishing in a friendly setting.

The complex features several well-maintained lakes, each offering a different style of sport. The most popular include Spring Lake, famous for its big carp; Match Lake and Cary Lake, which provide fantastic mixed fishing; and Lodge Lake, often used for coaching and junior sessions thanks to its easy access, comfortable pegs, and high catch rates.

All pegs are well built, with stable platforms and level access. Depths vary from 3 ft to 8 ft, and every lake holds a rich stock of fish including carp to 20 lb+, bream to 7 lb, tench to 5 lb, perch over 2 lb, plus plenty of roach, rudd, and skimmers. Whether fishing the pole, waggler, or feeder, Viaduct guarantees a busy and enjoyable day’s sport.

Facilities include on-site toilets, ample parking, a well-stocked tackle shop, and a café serving hot food — making it a brilliant choice for families and coaching groups.

Recommended tackle

Viaduct is perfectly suited to beginner and junior setups while still catering for more advanced anglers.

For Silver Fish & Mixed Bags:

  • Pole or Whip: Up to 8 m for close-range action
  • Float Rod: 10–12 ft waggler rod, 3–5 lb mainline, 2–3 lb hooklength
  • Feeder Rod: 9–10 ft quiver-tip rod, 4–6 lb mainline, small cage or method feeder
  • Hooks: Size 18–14 barbless with maggot or corn
  • Tip: Fish at 4–6 m with steady feeding to keep the swim active

For Carp on Spring & Cary Lakes:

  • 2.5–2.75 lb test-curve carp rods
  • 10–12 lb mainline
  • Hair rigs with inline or safety leads
  • Barbless hooks only
  • Unhooking mat and large landing net required

Recommended bait

Viaduct’s fish respond well to a simple, natural approach that keeps bites coming all day.

Lodge & Match Lakes (ideal for juniors):

  • Maggots (red or white)
  • Casters
  • Sweetcorn
  • 4 mm & 6 mm soft pellets
  • Micro pellets for feed
  • Worm or chopped worm
  • Light groundbait mix (bream/roach blend)

Feed small amounts regularly — a little and often approach works best. Use small balls of groundbait or a pinch of pellets to keep fish competing in your swim.

Spring & Cary Lakes (for larger carp):

  • 8–10 mm pellets
  • Mini boilies
  • Sweetcorn and bread
  • PVA bags with pellet and crumb
  • Bright hookbaits such as pineapple or strawberry pop-ups
