Summer Lane Lake

Summer Lane Lake is one of the most welcoming and enjoyable waters managed by Weston Angling Association (WAA), offering a brilliant day’s fishing for juniors, families, and beginners. Located just outside Weston-super-Mare, the lake provides a safe, well-kept environment where young anglers can learn new skills, build confidence, and enjoy plenty of bites. 

The venue is split into two waters – the front lake and the back lake. Both are well stocked, but the back lake is especially popular for junior matches and coaching sessions thanks to its even depths, central island feature, and reliable fishing. It regularly produces impressive catches, with match weights often exceeding 100 lb, making it a great place to learn about competition angling in a friendly setting. 

Summer Lane offers around twenty well-spaced pegs, including two wheelchair-accessible platforms, ensuring it’s inclusive for all anglers. Depths range between three and six feet, and the fish respond well to simple tactics. The water holds a variety of species including carp to 18 lb, bream to 3 lb, tench to 4 lb, roach and rudd around the pound mark, perch to 2 lb, and eels to 3 lb. With such a range of species, there’s always something feeding whatever your approach. 

For carp, small PVA bags filled with pellets and a bright hookbait are a reliable option, while feeding micro pellets little and often can keep fish competing in your swim. Targeting the island or margins later in the day often brings bonus fish. Coarse anglers will find success pole fishing with maggots, chopped worm, or sweetcorn, or float fishing in the margins where roach, tench, and small carp patrol. A simple groundbait feeder also works well when casting towards the island or open water. 

The venue is perfect for young anglers who enjoy variety and constant activity. Junior matches at Summer Lane are friendly and supportive, giving newcomers a great introduction to club angling. With regular events run by Weston Angling Association, it’s a place where children can progress from casual fishing to light-hearted competition while learning good angling practice. 

To protect the fish and maintain fair use of the venue, anglers are reminded to follow WAA rules at all times: no pike or lure fishing, barbless hooks are recommended, and keepnets should only be used during official matches.

For Carp Angling

  • 10–12ft carp rods with a test curve of 2.5–3lb are ideal.
  • Use a reliable baitrunner or freespool reel loaded with 10–12lb mainline.
• Rigs & End Tackle:
  • PVA bag setups with short hooklengths work well.
  • Size 8–10 barbless carp hooks are recommended.
  • Fluorocarbon or coated braid hooklinks around 6–8 inches.
• Other Gear:
  • Medium carp landing net (42” arms).
  • Unhooking mat or cradle (essential for carp care).
